Barangaroo Cutaway

Few transformations on Sydney’s foreshore have been as dramatic or as technically demanding as the Barangaroo Cutaway. Carved into the sandstone beneath Barangaroo Reserve, this new event space required precision and technical expertise – exactly the kind of project that showcases what JN Engineering does best. Access constraints, unconventional geometry, heritage-sensitive surroundings, and the performance expectations of a high-profile public venue all had to be managed in parallel.

The existing space with its natural sandstone walls needed to be enclosed with a new entry, foyer glazing and overhead skylights. The interior was then fitted out with amenities required to support large-scale events.

JN provided the structural design and certification for three key glazing elements: skylight glazing, front entry glazing, and fixed foyer glazing. Each element presented its own set of challenges.

The 34 skylight panels were installed in upper and lower configurations, with each panel measuring approximately 3.5 x 3.0 metres. With the glazing sitting around 15 metres above the ground floor, access was a significant constraint throughout the project. Working at height in a confined underground environment required careful planning and coordination at every stage.

The frameless fixed foyer glazing presented a different kind of challenge. Required to span 5.5 metres horizontally and 8.5 metres in height across three panels, the glazing also had to be shaped to follow the contour of the natural rock face behind it.

Our civil engineers delivered a coordinated solution that met both the technical requirements and the architectural vision for the space.

This project highlighted our commitment to responsive engineering, the idea that great engineering is about anticipating project needs and finding solutions that hold up over time.

The venue now hosts some of Sydney’s most significant cultural and corporate events. The glazing performs exactly as designed, the space reads as both dramatic and refined, and the engineering that makes it all possible is largely invisible.

JN Engineering has worked on landmark projects across NSW and Queensland for over 50 years, and our structural and civil engineering teams are experienced in technically demanding briefs that require creative, rigorous thinking.
