Pinnacle apartments, Cronulla, is certainly a project to remember. In partnership with Innovate Architects and Gledhill Constructions, the team at JN provided multidisciplinary engineering services for this new luxury residential complex, including Civil, Structural, and Building Services design. This boutique waterfront development comprised of 6 levels, with a single apartment per floor, and 2 basement carpark levels.

Working with such an iconic location involved great care and consideration for the oceanfront conditions, the protection of a heritage listed clifftop site, and the careful planning of stabilising a narrow site. The structural engineers designed a strong shoring system to protect the foundations of the site and surrounding buildings. As the clifftop is heritage listed the civil team had to develop innovative solutions for the drainage of services. After much consultation with the neighbouring building owners a system was developed for the services to drain via stormwater onto the Esplanade below via an easement utilizing the neighbouring services locations.

Being a waterfront property, it was, of course, essential to ensure apartments were able to take advantage of the views with plenty of windows. The façade was carefully designed to take advantage of the ocean views, whilst considering the thermal impacts that this can have, whilst a strategic structural stability system was designed to take advantage of the open spaced façade whilst maintaining a balanced structural integrity.

Finally, having in-house remedial specialists the design team worked on a strategy to combat the risk of corrosion over time due to the proximity of the site to the ocean. The design team carefully detailed requirements for waterproof additives on all concrete, designed for minimal exposed metal and ensured all pipes were concealed internally.
