A – Listening and planning. As an engineer you are always dealing with clients, as a graduate engineer you have to listen to senior engineer’s instructions. Being able to follow directions is key in meeting project’s deadlines without mistakes.
Q – What are the most important qualities for an engineer to have?
A – Listening and planning. As an engineer you are always dealing with clients, as a graduate engineer you have to listen to senior engineer’s instructions. Being able to follow directions is key in meeting project’s deadlines without mistakes.
Q – Explain what makes an effective engineer in your eyes.
A – Effective engineer means understanding the end goal from the beginning. I admire project engineers as they are able to have a plan from the get-go. Knowing what to design at the correct stage of design is key in meeting deadlines.
Q – Tell me about a recent engineering problem you solved.
A – We had to design a carpark where the client wanted a lot of light. This was an issue with the neighbours as they would suffer from obtrusive lighting effects. Modelling the design with calculations was key in order to gain “Pass Certificates” and to keep the client happy. It worked out in the end.
Q – Tell me about an engineering problem you successfully solved that required outside the box thinking.
A – We had our Design Engineer on holidays when I received a call having to deal with a client about a project I hadn’t worked on. I had to think as if I was him in order to reply to the questions asked; the question was regarding solar systems and inverters. Thankfully the client was happy but I was really put on the spot.
Tony Qi | Electrical Design Engineer
Q – Tell me a little about yourself, where did you Graduate from?
A – Graduated from University of Sydney
Q – What do you enjoy most about being an engineer?

The last point is especially important as it shows the engineer has a great understanding of multiple aspects of engineering.
Q – Tell me about a recent engineering problem you solved.
A – The most recent engineering design/problem I undertook was whether a “new” roof platform with HVAC units could be fixed to the existing roof structure. I had to check purlin and rafter capacity, along with find the optimum location on the roof for the new structure.
Q – Tell me about an engineering problem you successfully solved that required outside the box thinking.
A – I haven’t had the chance to solve an outside the box problem. Most of my work/designs require a straightforward approach, as I’m still constantly learning. Once I have a base knowledge in certain areas then I will be able to think more critically about finding a better solution to some designs.
Quy Nguyen | Graduate Structural Design Engineer
Hi, my name is Quy, and I recently graduated from UTS with a degree in civil engineering. As part of degree, I have had different opportunities to work in different fields within construction that included a short stint in council to a graduate engineer developing temporary works designs for major infrastructure jobs.
My favourite part of being an engineer is the opportunity to design buildings that shape the built environment around me. An example of this would be when I had the opportunity to design a suspended double-sided formwork to pour 6m tall deflection walls as part of the Sydney Metro works.
I believe that problem solving is the most important skill for an engineer. This coupled with an open mind in my opinion make an effective engineer who can create out of the box solutions. Additionally, an experienced engineer makes an effective engineer as they have been exposed to various techniques, designs and analysis methods which help to facilitate the development of unique solutions for complex problems.
