At JN, we believe in the power of fostering young minds to embrace the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). We were thrilled to sponsor the 15th annual Southern Highlands Science and Engineering Challenge for High Schools and the 9th Discovery Day for Primary Schools, held on Monday, May the 27th, and Tuesday, May the 28th. These inspiring events brought together over 500 students from 8 local high schools and 14 primary schools in the area.
An initiative run by The University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge, in partnership with Engineers Australia and Rotary Club, this week’s events were a hive of activity and enthusiasm as students engaged in hands-on challenges designed to spark their interest in STEM. The diverse range of activities included designing fish traps, creating wind turbines and exploring the principles of ElectraCITY.
JN are proud to support such a significant initiative through our financial sponsorship. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the students were truly inspiring. Over 50 dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. Their commitment and passion for STEM education helps in creating an environment where young minds can thrive.
Claudia Novati, one of our Associate Structural Engineers, again volunteered her time for this year’s event activities. Claudia was involved in the bridge building exercise, which challenged students to construct a model bridge out of balsa wood and masking tape, which then had to support a railcar carrying increasingly heavy weights as it raced across a test rig! Claudia helped guide students through the engineering principles needed to construct their bridges, sharing her expertise and passion for structural engineering!
The Science and Engineering Challenge and Discovery Days are more than just educational events. They are vital opportunities for students at critical junctures in their schooling to explore potential career paths in STEM. By engaging in these practical and collaborative activities, students gain a deeper understanding of the real-world applications of science and engineering principles. For many, these experiences are pivotal in their decision to pursue further studies and careers in these fields.
“I had fun doing the Challenge. If that’s what you can do for a job I will definitely continue with science and an engineering career.”
“It has encouraged me to continue in science and maths and other engineering activities and broaden my career options.”
– Student participants from previous years
The importance of initiatives like the Science and Engineering Challenge cannot be overstated – they play a crucial role in shaping the future supply of engineers and scientists, providing students with the inspiration and confidence needed to follow a STEM path. We believe that today’s participants will become tomorrow’s innovators, tackling the engineering and scientific challenges of the future.
A great time was had by all, with students leaving the event with newfound knowledge, skills, and a greater appreciation for the exciting possibilities within STEM industries. JN look forward to continuing our support for this invaluable initiative and witnessing the future achievements of these bright young minds.
JN remains committed to empowering the next generation of scientists and engineers, and we are excited about the future possibilities that our sponsorship of this week’s initiatives helps to unlock.
The bridge-building challenge was a highlight of the day!
