JN Achieves TAO Accreditation for Transport for NSW

We are proud to announce that we have now been recognised as a Technically Assured Organisation (TAO) under the Transport for NSW TAO Scheme.

This accreditation acknowledges our strengthened systems, processes and capability to deliver engineering and asset services with self-assurance for NSW transport infrastructure projects.

What the TAO Scheme means

The TAO Scheme is managed by Transport for NSW and is designed to recognise organisations that have the technical capability, documented systems and operational processes to deliver asset and engineering services with a high degree of reliability and assurance.

Being a TAO means JN Consulting Engineers are authorised to provide “self-assured” services within our defined scope of authorisation, subject to ongoing surveillance and audit by the regulator.

In practice this translates to:

  • A clear governance, quality and competency framework underpinned by evidence.
  • Robust management of engineering processes including assurance, configuration, stakeholder interaction and continual improvement.
  • The ability to participate in transport infrastructure projects in NSW with greater confidence and authority.

“TAO accreditation was a key step toward working on Sydney Trains projects. It gives us the platform to contribute our engineering capability to critical transport upgrades across NSW.”

– SCOTT MCMILLAN,
CIVIL MANAGER

Our journey to TAO accreditation

The path to obtaining our TAO accreditation has been rigorous and reflective of our commitment to raising our standards. Some of the steps we took include:

  • Refining our Quality Management System (QMS) to align with the requirements of the TAO framework.
  • Deploying new competency-management tools and learning systems – to evidence our engineers’ capability and continual professional development.
  • Our HR and Quality teams refined JN’s competency framework, benchmarked engineering and leadership roles, and expanded our learning library. The process allowed us to take a more structured, transparent approach to professional development across all disciplines.
  • Our implementation was later recognised by ReadyTech as a Gold Standard client for competency assessment, reflecting the strength of JN’s framework and our commitment to excellence in engineering practice.
  • Identifying and documenting our existing project evidence across key categories such as system safety assurance, configuration management, stakeholder management, human factors in design, and engineering process planning.
  • Undergoing multiple review iterations and providing project supporting evidence to meet the scope of authorisation we applied for.
  • Implementing key improvements identified through the certification process.
TAO Accreditation for JN Consulting Engineers Process
Through the process we strengthened our internal systems and our capability to deliver asset and engineering services for NSW transport infrastructure clients.

What TAO accreditation means for our clients and partners

By achieving TAO accreditation, JN Consulting Engineers affirms our position as a trusted partner in the transport, infrastructure and engineering sector in NSW. Our accreditation:

  • Provides clients and collaborators with confidence in our documented systems and our ability to self-assure engineering services for transport assets.
  • Demonstrates our commitment to continual improvement, competency development and compliance with the standards set by Transport for NSW.
  • Positions us to respond to opportunities in rail, heavy-rail, civil-infrastructure and associated disciplines under the TAO authorisation.
  • Reinforces our dedication to delivering high-quality, safe, reliable engineering services for the infrastructure that supports communities across NSW.

Looking ahead

Although our certification is now in place, our work is far from done. We will continue to:

  • Maintain our surveillance readiness and ensure our systems stay current with evolving Transport for NSW standards.
  • Expand our scope of authorised services where appropriate — reflecting our growth and diversity of disciplines.
  • Foster the ongoing professional development of our team, ensuring that our engineers and specialists remain at the leading edge of capability.
  • Leverage this accreditation as a platform for delivering even greater value, innovation and reliability in our future projects.

“Now that we’re a TAO organisation, we can collaborate with other accredited partners with complete confidence — opening new opportunities, strengthening our capability and ensuring clients receive assured, high-quality engineering services.”
