Pinnacle apartments, Cronulla, is certainly a project to remember. In partnership with Innovate Architects and Gledhill Constructions, the JN team provided multi-disciplinary engineering services for a new luxury residential complex, including Civil, Structural and Building Services design. The boutique waterfront development comprises six levels, with a single apartment per floor and two basement carpark levels.
Working in such an iconic location involved great care and consideration. Oceanfront conditions, the protection of a heritage listed clifftop site and the careful planning to stabilise a narrow site were challenges that our team met with confidence. Our structural engineers designed a strong shoring system to protect the foundations of the site and surrounding buildings. Working with a heritage listed site required our Civil team to develop innovative solutions for the drainage of services. After much consultation with neighbouring building owners, a system was developed for the services to drain via stormwater onto the Esplanade below, via an easement utilising the neighbouring services locations.
Being a waterfront property, it was essential to ensure the apartments were able to take advantage of the oceanfront views. The façade was carefully designed with plenty of windows, whilst considering the thermal impacts that these can have. A strategic stability system was designed to take advantage of the open spaced façade whilst maintaining a balanced structural integrity.
Our in-house remedial specialists worked with the design team on a strategy to combat the risk of corrosion over time, particularly given the site’s proximity to the ocean. The design team carefully detailed requirements for waterproof additives on all concrete, designed for minimal exposed metal and ensured all pipes were concealed internally.
